About the Artists

Janis Stanek

Artist Statement

The goal of my work is to express color in all its beauty.  I work primarily in transparent watercolor and I use it as an opportunity to explore the range of possibilities through subtle changes in color, color choice, composition, method of application, surface preparation, etc. I choose not to push my own personal beliefs onto the audience.  Rather, I think that any meaning or concept comes second, the quality of the actual work is what is paramount.  I draw inspiration from the real world around me, be it from small objects found in my studio, nature in my own backyard or travels around the our country or world.  For inspiration I also look to historical artists such as Burchfied and Picasso and other more contemporary watercolor artists.

Through the medium of paint I seek to utilize various color harmonies and surface textures to visually engage the audience.  I like to experiment with representing subject matter in ways that range from visually realistic to abstract.
